Boston Bruin, that is! Yes, this place is swarming with Bruin fans. We ran into a little trouble trying to get a reservation in Boston. Not being hockey fans, we had no idea that the Boston Bruins were in the play-offs for the Stanley Cup. Game 3 is being played tonight. That means the hotels in the city are sold out. Luckily our rewards program helped us get a room at the Marriott but the prices skyrocketed! We're thrilled to have a room and it is a lot of fun being in the middle of the excitement.
We began our day in New Castle, New Hampshire. It was a beautiful morning. The showers that came in overnight were gone and the sky was clear. After breakfast we walked along the water, checking out the boats, enjoying the view.
The drive is only an hour and a half to Boston. We remembered how bad the traffic could be and started out with our handy GPS. With Jim driving and my navigating, we arrived without a scratch! Not even a horn honk!
Every large city has a tour that takes you to the highlights of the town. We thought the trolley would be the best way to see the entire city. You can hop off at any stop and get back on when you please. These homes are in Beacon Hill, the high rent district in Boston.
On the left is the State Capital and the right is the cobblestone street in front of Paul Revere's home.
We had walked this walk with the kids years ago and didn't have the urge to go inside the home again with the prices they charge for that.
Jennifer and Jimmy, I hope you remember that trip fondly. Walking part of the Freedom Trail brought back so many memories and we enjoyed reminiscing. We stopped in the North End for Italian food and the specialty of the house did not disappoint. No lobster this time. It was a fat noodle rolled around Prosciutto, mushrooms and cheese, topped with a Vodka cream sauce. Wonderful! We both enjoyed it. You can't go wrong with the house special! Time to walk off that lunch!
This is a statue of Paul Revere with the Old North Church in the background. This town is so full of history. You can't help but be in awe of your surroundings until something comes along to bring you back to the present.
The fans have dressed Paul Revere in a Bruins jersey! Pretty funny!
In the Copps Hill Burial ground the headstones date back to the 1600's. I know for my son-in-law, Mark Addis, that's not old at all. In England the headstones go back centuries earlier but for those of us in the New World, that's ancient.
This is the TD Garden, home of the Bruins and where the game will be played tonight. The fans are already getting into the party mode. It's time to hop off the trolley and head back to the hotel.
Across from the hotel is the Prudential Center. The John Hancock Tower has an observation deck and lounge at the top. (Linda, you may not want to read any further!) We took the elevator to the 52nd floor for a cocktail and a window seat. A thunderstorm was just blowing in and it was a spectacular sight. We felt like we were as high as the clouds and the lightening was putting on a fabulous show below us. I tried to get a picture of a lightening bolt but they were way too fast for my little Cannon camera.
This view is looking straight down over the buildings of the city out to the harbor in the background.
The view below if from the front of the building. The weather is clearing up and we're hoping tomorrow will be clear. They are forecasting rain and we have tickets for a baseball game at Fenway Park. We're keeping our fingers crossed! We've had such great luck with the weather so far. So back we go to the room to get ready for this hockey game. We'll have some dinner and watch it only because we're here and the excitement is contagious! Tomorrow is another day to look forward to. It occurs to us that we have turned back and are on our way back home. This trip has gone by way too fast. We've seen so much but there's a lot left to see. This is a huge country and we're barely scratching the surface.
And the only thing I can think of reading this is a potential power outage during the storm and I would be stuck in that elevator in the dark....with 50 other people...
ReplyDeleteWe actually talked about what would happen if the power went out! Luckily, we didn't have to deal with that!
