Myrtle Beach Golf

When we first started to plan this trip we knew we wanted to play golf in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  Jim had made several trips with friends over the years but I had never been there.  His very favorite golf course is Caledonia Golf and Fish Club. When I tried to get a tee time we found we would have to get here on Sunday if we wanted to play. They would be closing for a week on Monday! We got the latest time we could and decided to drive from Savannah to Myrtle Beach to play the course.

I may not have mentioned this yet but I have been enjoying sleeping in most mornings.  Jim gets up and has coffee, reads and very patiently waits for me to wake up.  I have not made a graceful transition to Eastern time.  So, when I knew I had to get up at 6:30 so we could get on the road I may have complained a bit.   I was really tired!  Because I am not yet adjusted to the time zone I have a hard time falling asleep before midnight.  I managed to get up and get ready to make the 3 hour drive to the golf course.

It was a beautiful drive.  The scenic drive took us along the coast and the waterways are huge. The recent storm may have added to the many ponds and rivers that we crossed.

It's hard to believe how big the ships are that travel up the channels inland. These are just a couple of shots that I took. I will admit that I was nodding off and fell behind on my photographer duties.

We arrived at Caledonia in time for a nice lunch before golf.  The entrance to the club is lined with moss covered oak trees. What a lovely welcome to a beautiful course.  It is exactly what you would expect the South to look like.

I must say, I was so happy to be here and immediately fell in love with this place.  I was so wrapped up in golfing I only took a few photos.  We were paired with another couple about our same age. They were from Michigan and we hit it off. By the 3rd hole we were already at ease with each other it was like playing with good friends.  Again, having too much fun for photography! I was the worst Bog Planner today!

The course is every bit as lovely as Jim had said. We were a bit concerned about the weather. The forecast said rain and thunderstorms.  While we were waiting to play the thunder was so loud the storm seemed to be right above us.  The Golf Pro said they weren't expecting it to come across the river and that we'd be fine.

He was right, it cleared up and we never had a hint of rain. We did have that high humidity that everyone tells you about! The course was so beautiful with the moss covered trees and water on so many holes we didn't mind the humidity. There was a breeze on occasion that kept us from melting.

I was worried about the alligators and we didn't see one! Now I'm disappointed. I didn't want to get close but I'd have like to see a few. We were told that they go into hiding when there's a storm or a large rainfall. So I suppose we'll have to make another trip back here some day just for the gators.  Jim says he'll take me to the Alligator Farm tomorrow but I'm over it! Next time!

After golf we sat on the porch with our new friends Jackie and Greg for a nice cold drink. They have rocking chairs lined up along the porch that overlook the 18th hole. Everyone sits there to watch the players so there's a lot of pressure to play well! We both played well today and that made it even more fun.

Time to head for our hotel. It's been a long day and we need dinner and a shower!  The Litchburg Inn is right on the ocean. I had no idea of that when  I made the reservation but it was a nice surprise. We sat out by the pool at dinner. This is a great family vacation spot and there were kids everywhere. It sure made me realize how much I miss my kids and Grandkids! We watched the kids play in the ocean and after dinner decided we needed to put our feet in the Atlantic.

As tired as we were, we walked down the beach and put our feet in the water. I will admit to being partial to the Pacific! This is a nice view but nothing like we see on the West Coast.  The water was warm and it felt great.  Just a few minutes though because we are so ready for bed! This has been an exhausting day!

Because we didn't have time to stop and sight see on the drive up, we are back tracking tomorrow. We don't want to miss seeing Charlston, SC. We're going to take the hour drive back to Charleston and stay there for the night. We need a slow, relaxing day before we move on to Nashville.  We're going to need our energy for boot stomping at the Grand Old Opry!
