We drove through Pennsylvania and it was breathtaking. The rolling hills are covered with trees and the farms could be out of a storybook.
We were able to listen to the US Open as we drove so the time passed quickly.
We came upon Newfoundland, PA. I had heard my entire life that my Dad had been stationed in Newfoundland during WW II. I always thought that was Canada! When we saw Newfoundland, PA, it made me wonder if that's where he spent his war years. I got out the iPad and researched it. There was an Army base that managed the records for the Army here. He used to talk about taking the train to New York while he was on leave. This makes so much more sense! How did I never know that he was in Pennsylvania and not Canada? I'll check that out when I get back to Fresno but it was pretty cool to be in the same place my Dad had spent his years during the service.
We spent the night in the little town of Middletown, New York. We had a nice dinner and prepared to move on to Boston today. As we travel each day we decide where we should stay next. When we decided to go to Boston the goal was to attend a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. I discovered that the team is out of town and the first game would be on Tuesday. We changed the plan and drove to Maine first. We have stayed at different Marriott hotels each night because we love those Marriott points! A free room comes in handy when on a road trip! I found a place on the water in New Castle, New Hampshire that sounded perfect.
Oh My Gosh!!! We have the most perfect room! This hotel is a registered historical hotel and it is fabulous! It is Wentworth By the Sea and it is perfect.
We have a sitting room, a lovely bedroom and TWO bathrooms! I don't know how we got so lucky but this is one of the most beautiful places we've ever stayed. The photo on the right is the view out of our window. What a view!
After checking in we drove into Maine. Long before we left on this trip we had seen an episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. It featured Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery, Maine. We jotted the name down and put it in the map. We knew we needed to check this place out. It is a roadside joint that has the best lobster stew that I've ever tasted! It was worth the trip across country just for that soup!
We drove up the coast of Maine to Kennebunkport. This is everything I expected New England to be. The homes, the water and the views are spectacular. I had to put my feet in the water and this time it was cold!
We had the beach to ourselves. It was cool enough for a light jacket and that was refreshing! We were also able to listen to the US Open the entire time we drove along sightseeing! How great is that???
Back to our room to sit by the fire and watch the final 9 holes of the golf. Finally, downstairs to the restaurant for dinner, yes, lobster again! A perfect dinner to top off a perfect day!
Cheers!
OK, now New Hampshire is on my list. This is getting expensive, girl!
